61st International FISEC Games 2009 |
|
|
18th – 22nd July, Portugal
Junior Olympic 2 swimmer Lorna Breeze is ready to depart for Europe to compete at the 61st International FISEC Games representing Great Britain from the 18th- 22nd July.
The games are a multi sport event that sees competitors from 12 countries: Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Spain, France, Holland, Hungary, England, India, Italy, Malta and Portugal all competing for a place on the podium.
The event sees more than 1200 competitors’ aged 14-17 taking part.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish Lorna good look on her international journey as well as the ASA National Youth Championships in Sheffield England a week later.

Eleni Swims into the Record Books |

|
British Gas Scottish National Championships - Glasgow & Welsh National Short Course Championships – Newport
Congratulations go to Eleni Papadoplous (17) a member of Junior Olympic 2 and part of British Swimming’s World Class Development Program, as during the Scottish national Championships Eleni swam her way to the record books setting a new British and European Record in the Women’s 200m Butterfly (S10) classification.
As if this was not enough for the talented 17yearold less than two weeks later she travelled to Newport Wales for the Short Course Championships where despite being in training she swam her way to yet another record for the Women’s 100m Butterfly this time lowering the British Record.
Congratulations to Eleni on what has been a great season so far.

Scottish National Championships |

Tollcross Park Leisure Centre Glasgow,
Thursday 25th June - Sunday 28th June
A small squad of swimmers for Junior Olympic 2 made the journey north into Scotland for the British Gas Scottish National Championships which doubled up as the last chance qualification meet for the 2009 World Swimming Championships to be held in Rome Italy.
Swimmers for Junior Olympic 2 competing at the meet were:

Eleni Papadouplos (17)
Highlights for the squad at the meet were Eleni Papdoplous swimming her way to yet another British Record in what has been an unbelievable season for the talented 17yearold.
Also producing another outstanding performance was 16yearold Lorna Breeze who swam her way into the ‘B’ Final in the Women’s 200m Butterfly.
The male contingent of the squad were not left in the wake of the female members with Conor Crozier demonstrating his new found speed across the sprint distances claiming a host of best times, also with a strong display in the Breastroke events was the oldest member of the squad Tian Abrie (18).
Well done to those swimmers who competed in one of the fastest competitions in Britain in 2009. |

Sunderland Aquatic Centre – 30th & 31st May 2009
A huge entry at the 1st Sunderland Open Meet saw the assembly of a very high class field, which saw the likes of current GB international and Olympic finalist Robbie Renwick clash with Sunderland’s Ian Hulme in the premier event that was the men’s 100m FS.
Junior Olympic 2 swimmers put in a host of excellent displays claiming a bag full of medals as well as top 10 finishes.
The standout performer with a host of determined displays was Matthew Bell (15) who claimed bronze in the 200m Butterfly as well as three other top 10 places

9TH MIDDLESBROUGH OPEN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

NEPTUNE CENTRE MIDDLESBROUGH – 8TH / 9TH & 10TH MAY 2009
Following on from the previous weekend’s excitement at the Long Course Regional Championships, City of Sunderland’s swimmers made the short journey south to the 9th Middlesbrough Open Meet.
Swimmers from Junior Olympic 2 continued to excel in the pool where they claimed 8 medals in one of the fastest meets in the country. Medal winners for JO2 included.

Outstanding performances came by the way of 16year old Connor Crozier in the Men’s 100m FS stopping the clock in a time of 56.7 to slice off nearly 2 seconds of his previous best he also excelled in the 100m BK to claim a 1.03.9 again 2 seconds of a previous lifetime best.
Other members of the squad claiming new best times were: Tian Abrie Rachel Sinclair Alex P Harrison Alex Gunn Danny Scurr Danielle Staines Jake Wood.

NORTH EAST REGIONAL YOUTH & SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS |

SUNDERLAND AQUATIC CENTRE 2ND & 3RD MAY 2009 |
Ten members of the JO2 squad represented City of Sunderland ASC at the Regional Championships and continued to show a rapid rate of improvement as they swam there way to more success in the pool.
Two youth swimmers shone claiming places in the senior final they were
Matthew Snowdon (15) 9th 200m Breastroke
Lorna Breeze (16) 8th 200m Butterfly (NQT)
An outstanding performance came by the way of 15year old Matthew Bell who swam his way to a huge new lifetime best in the Men’s 1500m FS where he also claimed new lifetime bests at the 100 , 200 , 400 & 800m marks to touch home in 17.59.
All members of the squad performed extremely well in what was a difficult weekends racing against the top talent in the North East.

Swimmers will be training with full time Community Swimming Coach Danny Thompson.
Criteria
• Swimmers would normally be between 13 and 18 years of age.
• Have advanced stroke technique and effective turns in all four strokes
• Swimmers will normally be of Regional/ County Standard.
• Must be able to perform 400 IM under ASA laws and swim 1500m continuously using competition turns
• Minimum attendance of seven or eight sessions for 13 & 14year olds
Eight or nine sessions 14+ year olds per week
• Completion of all land based sessions unless otherwise directed by Squad Coach
Aims
• To enforce the swimmers competition and training skills, ready for the intense training required in the National Squad
• To introduce swimmers to energy systems and cyclical training
• To develop core stability and basic strength through land training
• Educate swimmers on time management, healthy lifestyles and gala protocols
• To build swimmers discipline and commitment levels
• To keep a detailed log book
• Swimmers will target National Championships, North East Regional Championships, Northumberland & Durham Championships and various selected Open Meets
• There will also be trips around the United Kingdom as well as abroad for selected swimmers.
