The City of Sunderland ASC took a total of 40 swimmers to the Felling Swimming Pool to compete in this season’s Gateshead and Whickham Graded Meet – and the team did not disappoint, taking a total of 88 medals – 31 Gold, 28 Silver and 29 Bronze.
Twelve year old Andrew Markham scored an outstanding six out of six – taking six gold medals from six events in the 200m individual medley, 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 100m breaststroke. During this, Andrew led two sweeps for the city in the 100m backstroke, where Harry Richardson took silver and Jack Tallentire took bronze, and the 100 Butterfly where Harry Richardson again took silver but this time Joshua Campbell took bronze. Harry also won two bronze in the 50m breaststroke and the 200m freestyle, while Joshua took a further silver medal in the 100m freestyle.
Sunderland’s 11 year old girls went one better, with Alexandra Clements leading three clean sweeps in the 100m butterfly, where Lauren Patterson took silver and Hannah Costello bronze; in the 200m individual medley with Lauren again taking silver and Gabrielle Burdess taking bronze; and the 100m freestyle where the placings were reversed. Alexandra Clements won two further gold’s in the 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke, while Lauren took a further silver in the 200m freestyle, with Hannah taking silver in the 100m breaststroke and Gabrielle taking two bronze in the 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke events.
In the 9 year old age group, Elizabeth Clements, Beth Nicholson and Eve Larsen took a total of 15 medals on the way to also achieving three clean sweeps in the 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley, where Elizabeth led both victories, with Beth and Eve each taking a silver and bronze medal. In the 50m backstroke the roles were reversed with a one two three of Beth Nicholson, Eve Larsen, Elizabeth Clements. Beth took two further gold in the 50m freestyle and breaststroke, with Eve finishing runner up in both races, while the 50m butterfly saw Elizabeth finish second ahead of Eve.
Joseph Pomfret excelled in the 10 year age group with golden success in the 50m butterfly, backstroke and freestyle events, while Daniel Feather and Thomas Burns struck gold in the 200m individual medley and 100m freestyle respectively. Thomas added to his gold with silver in the 50m butterfly and backstroke and a bronze in the 200m individual medley.
Shannon Costello led the line in the 14 year age group with four gold -200m freestyle, individual medley, 100m backstroke and freestyle – with a bronze in the 100m breaststroke, while Lida Abrie chipped in with silver in the 100m breaststroke and backstroke and bronze in 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and individual medley. Thirteen year old Sarah Morris took gold in the 200m individual medley and 100m freestyle, together with a bronze in the 200m freestyle, in which Francesca Lamb finished second adding to her 100m butterfly gold, 100m freestyle silver and 200m individual medley bronze. Fellow thirteen year old Beth Newport also took bronze in the 100m freestyle event.
Thirteen year old Adam Jurgens took four silver in the 200m individual medley and the 100m backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke, with a bronze in the 100m freestyle, while twelve year old Peter Davison took silver in the 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly and a bronze in the 100m freestyle.
Annabelle Joyce and Abigail Carlisle each took gold for the twelve year olds in the 200m freestyle and 100m freestyle respectively, with Annabelle also taking a bronze in the 100m butterfly. Ashlyn Liddle won silver in the 100m butterfly and bronze in the 100m breaststroke, while Christina Castledine took a bronze in the 100m freestyle event. Seventeen year old Amy Welsh also chipped in with two silver in the 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke and two bronze medals in the 100m breaststroke and freestyle races.
