ASA North East Regional Open Water Championships 2010 Castlegate Quay - Stockton on Tees
Saturday 14th August on the banks of the river Tees saw the conclusion
of the 09/10 season with the regional open water championships.
City of Sunderland ASC was represented in both the Mens and Womens Open
3K event by Matthew Bell (16) and Alex Robinson (15).
With the Open event combined the pair dominated the event from start to
finish. The pair showed their continued development out of the pool with
a much improved skill set Matthew moved into clean water from the start
with Alex swimming on his feet over the first kilometer. As the pair
moved into second lap of the circuit the pace increased and Matthew
stretched his lead. With just under kilometer to go and well in front
Matthew was now chasing the clock. Powering home with a huge legkick to
stop the clock in a new championship record of 33.14.00.
Only a week earlier Alex had been competiting on the national stage at
the National Youth Championships in Sheffield when swimming her way to
9th place in the 800m Freestyle. The longer distance proved to be no
problem for the teen finishing over a minitue ahead of GB Juinor
International Catorina Bruce of Borough of Stockton Swim Scheme.
"This was an outstanding display from both athletes. Matthew has worked
extreemly hard for five weeks in preperation for the event and is a
credit to the programme and to produce a championship record swim after
such a long season is a fantastic result for him .Alex has produced yet
another dominant performance to cap a splendid finish also to her
season."
"The athletes are now looking forward to a much deserved summer break
before returning to the pool in early September."
ASA National Age Group Championships
Six athletes from the City of Sunderland ASC represented the city at the showcase ASA National Age Group Championships, held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, where the finest swimming talent from not only the United Kingdom but also from Ireland, Canada and the United Arab Emirates, assembled to provide formidable opposition for the Sunderland team.
Fourteen year old Adam Taylor opened Sunderland’s account with a very solid swim in the 100m Backstroke claiming a twelfth place finish in a time of 1.03.89. Adam later went on to take fifth place in the 200m Backstroke heats with lifetime best time of 2.16.57, qualifying for the event finals where he took eighth spot.
In the girls 200m Backstroke, twelve year old Lucy Walton produced a fantastic swim to qualify for the final in seventh place, where she went on to claim sixth place in a life time best of 2.28.85. Lucy also smashed her personal best times in the 1500m freestyle - where she narrowly missed out on the medal positions - to impressively grab fourth spot in 18.11.22. In the 400m Individual Medley Lucy slashed a massive six seconds from her time to take seventh spot in 5.20.72. She also went on to qualify comfortably for the 400m Freestyle final where she claimed sixth spot with a time of 4.40.71.
After qualifying only months earlier for her first National Championships, thirteen year old Lucy Ellis amazed the Sunderland section of the crowd by powering her way to a new life time best by a huge 30seconds, rocketing up the national rankings to finish sixth in the 1500m Freestyle with a time of 17.59.11.
In the 200m Butterfly Adam Charlton competed well in the thirteen year age category finishing in a time of 2.30.49, while in the 1500m Freestyle, twelve year old Izzy Bosanko performed well to finish in a time of 19.26.90.
The youngest member of the squad, eleven year old Jessica Thompson, competing at her first national championships, swam her way to two finals. In the 400m Individual Medley she took ninth spot with a time of 5.44.29, while in the 200m Butterfly final she finished tenth with a time of 2.47.27, rounding off a fantastic week for Jessica.
Coach Danny Thompson said, ‘This was a fantastic series of performances for the ever developing Age Group Squad as we look to produce the best athletes in the UK.’
ASA National Youth Championships.
The City of Sunderland Swimming Club enjoyed a successful ASA National Championships held last week at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, where a team of eight swimmers took three bronze medals and accumulated 37 points to finish in a creditable 26th position.
The Club’s top performer was Jonny Carlisle who set personal best times in the boys 17 – 18 years backstroke events. Jonny displayed great racing skills to set faster times from heat to semi to final to grab the bronze medal in a very exciting and hard fought race. Jonny turned in a fast 27.91 seconds at the 50 metre mark and then held his place to set a new Northumberland & Durham senior record with a best time of 57.29. In the 200 metres backstroke, Jonny had a fantastic semi final to post a 2.03.65 and another Northumberland & Durham senior record to progress to the final with the fastest time. In the final, Jonny could not quite reproduce his time, but came away with the bronze medal in another excellent performance with a 2.04.62. Jonny’s efforts have earned him selection for the England Level 3 Talent Squad which includes training and educational opportunities, plus racing against the Canadian Youth Team at Sunderland next January.
Danielle Huskisson had a superb Championship, winning her first ever national medal to take bronze in the girls 16 – 17 years 1500 metres freestyle with a time of 17.07.79. With a well paced race, Danielle improved by a colossal 17 seconds – a just reward for training very hard over the last few months. Danielle had further success in the 800 metres freestyle, again making a big improvement to set a new personal best time of 9.05.12 to take sixth place.
Alex Robinson produced a stunning 800 freestyle effort to take ninth place in the girls 16 – 17 years. Her time of 9.12.64 was a personal best time by 5 seconds. Alex also had a solid 1500 freestyle where she placed fifth overall with a season’s best time of 17.37.50. Alex is now preparing for her next open water event which takes place on 14 August.
Josh Crowther underlined his recent progress with an excellent 100 metres freestyle. Josh made it through to the semi final posting 53.28 in the heats and then a 53.35 in the semi final. Josh also produced a great 24.81 in the 50 metres freestyle to just miss out on a semi final place.
Laura Dawson raced an excellent 100 metres butterfly to progress through to the semi final. Despite suffering from an acute shoulder injury, Laura put in an excellent heat time of 1.03.34.
Kathryn Woolston-Thomas raced several events with her best performance coming in the girls 14 – 15 years where she progressed to the semi final eventually placing fifteenth with a time of 27.75 seconds. Kathryn is now focussing on the UK School Games which take place at Sunderland on 2 – 4 September.
Also competing for the City of Sunderland were Lorna Breeze who produced two solid efforts in the 100 and 200 metres butterfly and Jennifer Tatters who also put in a solid 400 metres freestyle.
Head Coach Alastair Johnson said “Overall we have enjoyed respectable Nationals at both the Age Groups and the Youths. As we step up our training loads and expectations, we will build on our recent successes and look to make a much bigger impact in 2011. Our long term goal is to produce a succession of successful swimmers who can perform on the national and international stage.”

Information for Parents
Over the last few months it has been obvious that we need to improve the our coaching environment in order to help the swimmers train more effectively. As part of this process and to compliment the new parent Code of Conduct, then please could you note the following:
As from Monday 06 September, all parents must comply with the following:
When the pool is in short course mode (both morning and nights) - parents must sit / watch on the north balcony (sitting at the press tables on the south balcony is allowed)
When the pool is in long course mode - parents can sit / watch from either balcony
Please note that the Pool Management have been involved and they are keen to see parents use the north balcony as much as possible to allow for prompt emergency exits / people traffic management, and for the dryland to operate safely on the south balcony.
Please could all parents ensure that the coaches are not to be disturbed during the workout except for emergencies only. If you need to talk with the coach, then please approach the coach after the workout or make an appointment. All squads will now use the south balcony side to start their short course workouts.
Regards,
Alastair Johnson
