choice for all communities in the Sunderland and surrounding area.
The Club aim to provide opportunities for Long Term Athlete Development
and encourages members to obtain qualifications in teaching and coaching,
attend other sport related courses, and for non-swimming members to
qualify as ASA Officials.
The Club is primarily a competitive club and members of all ages are
encouraged to participate in swimming or swimming related competitive
activities such as water polo, diving, triathlon and synchronized swimming.
The Club also recognise that swimming regularly is part of a healthy
lifestyle and we will provide opportunities for non-competitive, but coached
swimming sessions to be available. |

Burns Meet
30 – 31 January 2010 |
Head Coach Report
We had 6 swimmers from the A Squad racing at the Burns Meet at the weekend. The Meet was of a very high standard which also incorporated the first British staged meet for swimmers on the various GB programmes and teams.
The 6 swimmers representing the City of Sunderland were Jonny Carlisle, Dan Heeley, Patrick Callan, Andy Cumberlidge, Jennifer Tatters and Kathryn Woolston-Thomas. Despite the swimmers being in mid cycle we had some solid performances.
Jonny Carlisle continued with his fine form from last year to win the 17-18 years 100 backstroke in a best time of 58.57. Jonny was just pipped for gold in the 200 backstroke to take the silver medal in an excellent 2.07.14.
Patrick Callan was our other top 10 finisher with good performances in the 100 breaststroke (9th place) and 200 breaststroke (10th place). Overall, the swim meet gave the swimmers the opportunity to improve their warm up and preparations, and to clearly establish their race plans for the rest of the season.
The next competition is the N&D Open and Youth Championships which takes place at Sunderland on 20-21 February. Alastair Johnson

| Newburn Graded Meet |
| 23rd & 24th January - Louisa Centre Stanley |
Newburn’s New Year Graded Gala held at the Louisa Centre Stanley is the first gala of 2010. This competition offers chances for age group swimmers to achieve N&D qualifying times and also prepare for the busy competition schedule soon approaching.
Sunderland swimmers had a fantastic weekend with many top 6 finishes and medals won as follows:
| Gold; |
26 |
| Silver; |
31 |
| Bronze; |
22 |
There were many swimmers who achieved N&D qualifying times in numerous events, too many to mention everyone. Also some swimmers gained NER qualifying times for Youth Championships at Sunderland in May and Age Group Championships at Sheffield in June a fantastic achievement, well done.
Matthew Wylie (Olympic Hopefuls) had an amazing swim in his 400 freestyle on Saturday afternoon. Matthews’s time of 5.22.49 is not only a 9 second personal best from a time achieved two weeks ago, it is also 8 seconds under the time he needed to achieve to be considered for a National Talent Programme. The time Matthew accomplished is also a S9 British Championship qualifying time.
A big positive from the weekend was to see so many talented young swimmers from Sunderland competing and winning medals, it looks good for the Diddy League but also for Sunderland Swimming Club’s future!!! |
