Welcome to the City of Sunderland Amateur Swimming Club website.
We are based at the Sunderland Aquatic centre. Our mission is to be the Swimming Club of
choice for all communities in the Sunderland and surrounding area.
The Club aim to provide opportunities for Long Term Athlete Development
and encourages members to obtain qualifications in teaching and coaching,
attend other sport related courses, and for non-swimming members to
qualify as ASA Officials.
The Club is primarily a competitive club and members of all ages are
encouraged to participate in swimming or swimming related competitive
activities such as water polo, diving, triathlon and synchronized swimming.
The Club also recognise that swimming regularly is part of a healthy
lifestyle and we will provide opportunities for non-competitive, but coached
swimming sessions to be available.
Sunderland Ladies Take Division 4 Honours
Sunderland clinched the Division Four title after a tense finale at Manchester Aquatics Centre 22 January.
Wins from their last two matches would have put Sunderland in the clear. But they struggled to overcome second-placed London Penguin Rockhoppers in their first game and had to settle for a 9-9 draw.
Three Fantastic individual goals by Anna Richardson, the division’s top scorer, earned Sunderland an 8-6 lead at the start of the last quarter. Then Rockhoppers rallied and, thanks to three goals by Benko, briefly claimed a one goal lead with only 27secs remaining. Sunderland looked to be in an impossible position of salvaging the point required to put them in pole position. However they pressed again and eventually a superb lob shot from Sunderland‘s Sam Crawford clinched a draw – with just one second remaining on the clock.
After this most electrifying and nerve shattering game Coach Dave Clarke and team Manger Maggie Ward rallied the girls in readiness for their final game.
The Sunderland girls needing a win over Southampton in the final game of the season to take the Title
It proved reasonably straightforward with a Disciplined Sunderland team going for Gold with goals from Anna Richardson, Alison Mell Sam Crawford and Judi Clayton. Sunderland winning 9-4.
Rockhoppers were involved in another cliffhanger – a Benko goal
53 seconds from the end squared the London derby against Polytechnic at 7-7.
Rockhoppers took runners-up spot to qualify for the play-offs.
Sunderland made it a clean sweep of the divisions awards by being presented with the Fair play award for Division 4 for the team with the least number of major fouls against them
Sunderland’s Anna Richardson was awarded the Top Goal scorer trophy for the second season in a row

Hi Everyone,
During Christmas and New Year we had Steph Proud (ex Chester-le-Street and now at the University of Florida) and Jemma Lowe (ex Borough of Stockton and now at Swansea ITC) training with the Performance A Squad. I asked them if they could do a short report on their recent successes, and they both have kindly obliged - please read below:

Reflections on the Commonwealth Games 2010 By Steph Proud
The English and Welsh team began our journey with a holding camp in Doha, Qatar where we enjoyed five star accommodation and world class training facilities. The mood of the camp shifted as we began to see the press coverage of Delhi with stories of a subpar athlete village and the threat of terrorism we wondered if we were going to be able to compete at all. However once our week in Doha was over we made the flight to Delhi on the private plane British Swimming had hired for the English, Scottish and Welsh teams.
Upon arriving at village I was pleasantly surprised, although I cannot say it had the glitz you would expect of a commonwealth games it was certainly functional (although the beds were rock hard.) The pool too was in my opinion up to world class standards and perfectly good for racing.
Once the competition started the atmosphere on the team rose (which was difficult as much of spectators stands at the pool were empty especially for the heats) and we all got into a routine of knowing what bus we must catch (the journey to the pool was at least 45 minutes each way), covering ourselves in mosquito spray and what food was ok to eat in the dining hall.
I raced on the 2nd, 5th and 6th days. The 100m backstroke which is swam on the 2nd day I was really happy with as it was a best time for me at 1.01.2 although it was disappointing coming 9th and just missing the final. I swam the 200m backstroke on the 5th day and finished 6th in the final just 0.3 seconds off my personal best time with a 2.09.2 on reflection of this I am still slightly disappointed with my finishing place as I believe I am capable of swimming the time that won a medal, but this is a feeling I can use in future competition and training. Again on the 6th day I finished 6th in the final of the 400m IM which was one of the toughest races of the meet being on the last day of the meet and having a world class field present. I knew it was going to be tough to improve upon the big PB I had at the trials in Sunderland and finished a couple seconds off my best time.
When I look back on my time on the English team it was definitely the most eye opening experience I have ever had at a swimming competition and I have travelled all over the world. Obviously, as India is a massive developing country, it posed many challenges. But overall I am proud to say I was a member of the English Commonwealth Games Team in 2010 and it is something every young swimmer should aim for.

Reflections on the World Short Course Championships 2010 by Jemma Lowe
The World short course championships in Dubai was incredible! The swimming pool was built especially for the meet & was breathtaking; shaped like a blue wave and lit up at night. It was amazing to see this sight everyday on our bus rides, especially as it was built in the middle of nowhere out in the desert.
Dubai created a successful championships with the best swimmers from all over the world breaking records and performing to their best. Being a part of and watching swimmers like Ryan Lochte break world record is always something I enjoy. The event was amazing to be a part of and I had a great experience.
I had no expectations going into these world championships as our season had finished not so long ago with the Commonwealth Games. However I went into my 200 fly final with an empty mind thinking anything could happen. To finish in second place, break a British record and see the results on the score board was such an amazing feeling. Winning the silver medal made the Dubai world championships experience even more worth while. Being part of the smallest team ever sent by GB was definitely different but really exciting, Chris Martin, Hannah Miley and I had a great week out in Dubai.
