Peterlee ASC End of Season Gala – Report by Jen Tatters

Nadia Loughlin started off the competition well for the Sunderland girls, finishing second in the twelve years 200 metres individual medley.  Nadia finished in a time of 3:14.74, a new PB for the young swimmer. She also competed in the 50 metres breaststroke and 50m backstroke, finishing in the top ten in both events.

The younger Sunderland girls had a clean sweep of medals in the nine years 50 metres backstroke, with Jasmine Campbell finishing first in a time of 47.98 seconds. Fellow swimmers Layla Trueman and Elyssa Palmer finished closely behind taking the second and third spots. The same trio of girls had a battle between podium places in the 50 metres freestyle, with Jasmine Campbell finishing first in a time of 42.55 seconds and Layla Trueman and Elyssa Palmer finishing closely behind.  In the 50m breastroke, Jasmine made it a hat trick of gold medals by finishing first with Georgia Richardson taking silver in a time of 1:01.99 minutes and Elyssa Palmer finishing fourth. Georgia also finished fifth in the 50m freestyle.

Nine year old Jessica Ord, competing in her first away gala, and ten year old Ella Harrison set new PBs in the 50m freestyle event, Ella Finishing in a time of 51.26, and Jessica finishing in a time of 51.92. Both gained top ten finishes.  Also gaining top ten finishes and PBs were ten year olds Emma Corbett-Skedd, Olivia Miller, Natasha Thorpe and Lauren Ventress.

The eleven to thirteen year old girls achieved many top ten finishes and PBs.  Gemma Sproates had a good race to finish second in the 50m backstroke event a time of 43.54 seconds, just slightly outside of her PB and finished in fourth place in the 50m freestyle in a new PB.  Alicia Barnes won a bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke, setting a new PB.  Molly Joyce and Madeleine Smith both finished just outside of the medals in their age groups, showing promising swims with PBs in the 50m backstroke and 100m breaststroke respectively.

Emily Atchison, Millie Harrison, Macy Robison and Laura-Jayne Smith all gained top ten finishes in the 12 years age group and all set PBs in each of their events.

Thirteen year old Katie Bittel finished sixth in the 50m backstroke in a time of 48.63, a new PB and achieved PBs in the 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke.  Sophie Alderson’s best result came in the 50m butterfly where she finished in fourth place in a new PB of 48.01 seconds.  Sophie also gained a PB in the 200m freestyle, finishing sixth.

Sunderland’s boys had some great swims to gain podium finishes. Nine year old Fran Proctor finished first  in the 50 metres breaststroke in a time of 59.40, dipping under the minute mark for the first time. He also won silver medals in the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle and was third in the 50m backstroke setting PBs in the breaststroke and butterfly events.  Lorenzo Corsi and Cian Coyne finished just behind Fran in the 50m freestyle with Lorenzo winning a bronze medal and Cian finishing 4th in what was his debut gala.

Joshua Convery, ten, won a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle and finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle events, setting new PBs in each.

Eleven year old boys Isaac Barnett, Kristian Dungca, Cameron Fairless and Benjamin Milford all finished in the medals.  Isaac won gold in the 50m backstroke, a hat trick of silver medals in the 50m backstroke and 50m and 200m freestyle and won bronze in the 50m breaststroke.  Kristian, competing in his first gala, came third behind Isaac in the 50m freestyle in a new PB of 42.81 seconds.  Cameron, also making his competitive debut, finished fifth in the same event and won a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke.  Benjamin won three medals: gold in the 100m backstroke and silver in the 50m breaststroke setting new PBs in each and finished second in the 50m backstroke.

Daniel Hepple finished first in the 12 years category in the 50m breaststroke with a time of 54.32 seconds.  He also finished second in the 100m breaststroke and set PBs in all of his events.   Fellow 12 year old Charles Partridge won silver medals in the 50m backstroke and freestyle events.

Completing the medal tally was thirteen year old Elliot Hearn.  Elliott was second in the 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle and won a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke.

This competition was a chance for the younger swimmers to show off the hard work from the season of training, and gain some new PBs so they could start the new season motivated and ready to race again. There were some promising performances heading towards the new season with numerous PBs set and seven gold, eighteen silver and nine bronze medals won.
