City of Sunderland ASC Short Course Qualifier 2016 – Report by Ian Faulds/Rebecca Graham

Sunderland ASC’s first home gala of the season was held on 8th and 9th October 2016. Attended by most of our local North East clubs, we also welcomed swimmers from Dumfries and Grantham.

The short course was a hard fought gala with Sunderland winning a total of 26 medals –  5 gold, 13 silver and 8 bronze medals in all.

 Boys 400 IM

The boys kicked off the gala at 9.00am prompt with the 400m Individual Medley.

Our medals in this event came from 15 year old Joseph Robbins who swam 5.28.15 to bring in the first bronze of the day. This was followed by the first gold won by Zak Logue in the 18 year group in a time of 4.32.36.

 Girls 200m Freestyle

The girls followed next with Ayumi Faulds winning silver medal in the under 11 group in a time of 2.31.24. There were personal best times from Tilly Abbott and Ayumi’s twin sister Yuki in the same age group.

Ilaisa Redda also swam a P.B in the 13 year age group.

 Boys 100m Backstroke

The Sunderland club record for 10 year olds in this event was smashed by Luke McGee who won bronze in a time of 1.19.92. Well done Luke! Kenneth Juan won the silver with P.B swims from Jay Manners and Joseph Pomfret in the 17 year group.

 Girls 100m Butterfly

The first girls fly event of the day saw 10 year old Ayumi Faulds win silver in a P.B time of 1.21.28.

Caitlin Cambrook in the 13 age group won the bronze medal.

Boys 50m Butterfly

No medals for the Sunderland boys in this event but many personal best swims from Alex Lazar, Fran Proctor, Connor Prior, Alfie McGuire, Kenneth Juan, and Josh Convery.

Girls 50m Freestyle

Freya Rayner brought home Sunderland’s only medal in this event, winning the 18 year group.

There were again many P.B swims from the Club’s younger swimmers, Grace Brewerton, Alice Cammock, Eve Foster, Millie Davis, Sophie Graham, Helena Wyness, Riona Sorianosos, Millie Foster and Molly Joyce.

 Boys 200m Breaststroke

Very good personal best swims from Jay Manners, Connor Prior, and Alfie McGuire in this event.

 Boys 400m Freestyle

After lunch the boys took to the pool again with 17 year old Zak Logue winning the bronze medal.

 Girls 200 IM

Sunderland’s Ayumi Faulds swam a new P.B of 2.47.87 to win the bronze in the under 11 year group.

There were also P.B swims from Riona Sorianosos and Layla Trueman.

 Boys 50m Breaststroke

P.B swims in this event from Oliver Dodsworth, Kenneth Juan, Arran Robinson, Alfie McGuire, Joshua Convery, Louie Bradley-Godfrey and Connor Prior.

Girls 50m Backstroke.

No medals won but again big improvement shown with P.B swims from Grace Brewerton, Millie Davies, Elyssa Palmer, Yuki Faulds, Layla Trueman, Riona Sorianosis, Molly Joyce and Caitlin Cambrook.were

 Boys 100m Freestyle

P.B swims from Connor Prior and Luke McGee in the under 11 group.

 Girls 200m Butterfly

Always a gruelling swim is this event, and Sunderland’s Ayumi Faulds brought home the gold medal in a new P.B of 2.54.22. There were also strong swims from Ilaisa Redda, Caitlin Cambrook and Anya Sordy.

Boys 200m Backstroke

In the under 11 group, Luke McGee broke the club record yet again in this event in a time of 2.49.57.

Kenneth Juan also swam a P.B of 2.50.92.

 Boys 100m IM

Zak Logue was back in the medal position again, with a silver in the 18 year group with a time of 1.01.48.

There were P.B swims from Louie Bradley-Godfrey, Alfie McGuire, Joseph Pomfret and Jay Manners.

 Girls 400 IM

Another hard race where under 11 Yuki Faulds swam a P.B in 6.28.80. There were also strong swims from Madeleine Smith, Ilaisa Redda and Vanessa Rubio.

Boys 200m Freestyle

Good powerful swims again from young Alfie McGuire and Luke McGee in this event.

Girls 100m Backstroke

18 year old Freya Rayner won silver in a time of 1.07.13 and in the 13 year group, Caitlin Cambrook also won silver with a great P.B of 1.12.76. There were P.B swims in this event from Yuki Faulds, Riona Sorianosis, Elyssa Palmer, Layla Trueman and Ilaisa Redda.

 Boys 100m Butterfly

In the disability group, Sunderland’s Gareth Orr swam in a time of 1.14.96, which earned him a points total of 449. Well done Gareth.

 Girls 50m Butterfly

Freya Rayner again won silver in a time of 29.00 in the 18 year group.

Bringing in the bronze in the 13 year group was another medal for Caitlin Cambrook with a time of 31.22.

P.B swims for Jessica Ord, Helena Wyness, Sophie Graham, Riona Sorianosos, Molly Joyce, Layla Trueman and Grace Abbott.

Boys 50m Freestyle

Kenneth Juan won silver in the under 11 age group in a P.B time of 31.85.

P.B swims for Oliver Dodsworth, Arron Robinson, Louie Bradley-Godfrey, Alfie McGuire, Joshua Convery, Connor Prior,and  Luke McGee.

GIRLS 200m Breaststroke

In the over 16s, Rachael Taylor brought home silver in a time of 2.38.93, with P.B swims in the under 11 group from the ever improving Sophie Graham and Ayumi Faulds.

Boys 1500m Freestyle

Well done to Sunderland’s Joseph Robbins in the 15 year age group, who swam a P.B time of 18.22.31.

Girls 400m Freestyle

Ayumi Faulds added to her tally for the weekend, winning silver in the under 11 category, in a P.B time of 5.14.47. Layla Trueman and Lara Greggs also swam P.B s.

 Boys 200 IM

Strong swims for Jay Manners, Joseph Robbins and Jay Manners. Also a new P.B for young under 11 Alfie McGuire in 3.05.56.

Girls 50m Breaststroke

Rachael Taylor won a bronze medal in the over 16 age group.

The younger girls showed vast improvement with P.B swims from Heather Robinson, Helena Wyness, Millie Foster, Riona Sorianosos, Alice Cammock, Sophie Graham, and Jessica Ord.

 Boys 50m Backstroke

In the under 11s Kenneth Juan won the gold medal in a new P.B of 35.27. Alexandru Lazar swam a P.B time of 39.99.

 Girls 100m Freestyle

Ayumi Faulds added to her silver collection in a time of 1.09.23. Millie Foster swam a P.B in the same age group (under 11s) in a time of 1.17.75.

Freya Rayner won the bronze medal in the 18 year group.

 Girls 200m Backstroke

Sunderland only had 3 swimmers in this event, all in the under 11 category. Riona Sorianosos and Tilly Abbott swam P.B times and a strong swim too from Yuki Faulds.

Boys 100m Breaststroke

Young Alfie McGuire swam a P.B of 1.40.41 in the under 11s.

 Girls 100m IM

In the final race of the day, under 11 swimmer Ayumi Faulds took silver again in a P.B of 1.19.48. There were also P.B swims for Ilaisa Redda, Lara Greggs and Rachael Taylor.

This concluded the gala which was well supported by all the competing clubs. Thanks to all who attended to support their swimmers. The officials also deserve significant recognition as they are all volunteers and do a great job. Without such support these events would not be possible.
