Diddy Kids Top Spot Bid
Durham and District Junior (Diddy) League. 28/02/2010
The City of Sunderland ASC junior swimming team commenced their second season in league one of the Durham and District Junior (Diddy) League, in fine form at The Louisa Centre, Stanley, last Sunday. Strong teams from Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Durham, Chester-le-Street, Tynemouth and Newburn provide the opposition in this year’s top league for club swimmers aged between 9 and 12 years. As last year’s runners up, the City of Sunderland team were aiming to take the title from the City of Newcastle this season and in an action packed series of races the two clubs continued to wrestle for top spot.
Harry Staines swimming in the boys 9 year old breast stroke took first place to put Sunderland into a strong early position, quickly followed by another first by the 11 year boys freestyle relay team consisting of, Daniel Feather, James Brewerton, Thomas Burns and Will Robinson. More individual first place successes by Alexandra Clements in the girls 11 year backstroke and Jodi Bunker in the girls 11 year breast stroke, followed up by a useful second place from Andrew Markham in the boys 12 year butterfly, helped the Sunderland team to establish an early lead in the days competition.
Sunderland continued to accumulate the points with Lauren Patterson, Jay Whitehead, Jodi Bunker, Alexandra Clements and Jennifer Sharp, gaining second place in the girls 11 year freestyle relay and medley relay races. The boys 11 year team continued their earlier success by winning the medley relay and taking second spot in the free style relay and butterfly relay races, whilst the boys 12 year team – Andrew Markham, Ryan Brewster, Kristian Donaldson, Harry Richardson and Callum Reveley - took second place in the medley relay.
Further individual successes were achieved with winning performances from Georgina Lamb in the girls 12 year freestyle and Joseph Pomfret in the boys 10 year butterfly race, followed by the girls ten year team comprising of Elizabeth Clements, Eve Larson, Beth Nicholson and Amelia Bateman, who were victorious in the medley relay race.
The Sunderland teams nine year old representatives consisting of Natalya Sharp, Stephanie Burdess and Charlotte Jurgens, together with; Max Vardy, Ben Hutchinson and Blake Stevenson, who were all making their ‘Diddy League’ debuts, also performed well for the club.
Two second placings by the boys 10 year team – Joseph Pomfret, Matty Walker Smith Harry Staines, and Callum Dunn - in the freestyle relay and medley relay races and a first place by the girls 12 year team - Laura Taylor, Ashlyn Liddle, Georgina Lamb, Christina Castledene and Jessica Thompson - in the freestyle relay, together with a second pace in the medley relay ensured that a healthy points total was achieved.
After an exciting competition, Sunderland finished second on the day to the City of Newcastle team. The team points totals after this, the first of five league meetings was; Newcastle 234 points, Sunderland 215 points, Tynemouth 188 points, Stockton 150 points, Newburn 137 points and Durham 129 points. Sunderland’s next involvement in this competition is at the Wear Valley Swimming Pool on 11th April.
Coach Paul Woodley said, ‘After the fantastic Diddy League campaign in 2009 it was important to get off to a good start in the first round of 2010 held at Stanley Pool. The league provides the best atmosphere of all the swimming galas during the season and the Sunderland swimmers flourished in this exciting atmosphere. Well done to them all.

“By holding the competition in a new city we are encouraging more people to see the sport and our swimming heroes will hopefully inspire the people of the North East into the pool.”
Cllr Paul Watson, Leader Sunderland City Council commented: “That the ASA chose to bring such a prestigious and significant event to Sunderland Aquatic Centre demonstrates that we really do have a world-class facility to be proud of. As well as being a community pool for Sunderland people, it was always hoped that our 50m pool would attract high-calibre national and international events such as this to our city.
“I’m sure that our city will be as proud as I am to greet the athletes and spectators and will give them a warm Sunderland welcome.”

These Championships are hugely significant, being the final qualification event for the Commonwealth Games.
“I really hope that the Championships in Sunderland will be inspirational to local swimmers of all abilities and will further raise the profile of swimming.”
Cllr James Blackburn, Member with Portfolio for Attractive and Inclusive City commented: “It’s exciting news that Sunderland is to host such an important event.
