COSASC New Year Meet 2015 – Report

Winning two gold medals and a silver medal each, Sunderland’s Adam Taylor, 18, Freya Rayner, 16 and Rachel Taylor, 14 all broke club records at City of Sunderland ASC’s home gala.

Adam finished first in the 50m and 100m butterfly, just ahead of Cockermouth’s Luke Greenbank.  Adam’s time of 55.37 in the 100m race was a new club record.  In the 100m backstroke, Luke edged Adam into second place by a margin of just 3 hundredths of a second!

Freya, although slightly off her best pace, still set a new club record for 16 – 18 year old girls in the 50m backstroke with a time of 31.36 seconds and won a gold medal.  Her other gold came in the 50m freestyle and she picked up a silver medal in the 100m butterfly.

Rachel swam in three events and set PBs in each.  Winning gold in the 200m breaststroke and 400m I/M, she set a new club record for the 14 year old age group in the breaststroke with a time of 2:39.63 minutes, reducing her time by 3 seconds and was just outside the British Championship qualifying time.  Her breaststroke time also broke the club’s All Time record.  Her 400 I/M saw an improvement of 8 seconds and with a 1 second improvement in the 200 I/M, Rachel took home silver.

Disability swimmers Nicole Lough, 19 and Josef Craig, 17, both won gold medals.  Nicole, a S14 category swimmer, finished first with the greatest number of disability points in each of her four events: 50m and 100m breaststroke, 50m butterfly and 200 I/M.  Impressively, Nicole finished ahead of the non-disability swimmers in the 50m breaststroke event and was third in the 100m breaststroke.  Josef, a S8 category swimmer, finished with a gold medal in the 100m freestyle and a silver medal in the 400m freestyle based on British Disability Points.

Fifteen year old Anya Sordy was the club’s other gold medallist, finishing first in the 800m freestyle.  Anya added a silver medal from the 200m freestyle event and set a new PB in the 50m freestyle.

Winning five medals and recording 3 PBs, Joseph Pomfret, 15, finished second in the 200m butterfly and 200m freestyle events and won a hat trick of bronze medals in the 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke and 200 I/M.

Connor Steele, 13 and Mason Jaques, 16 each won four medals.  Connor improved his times in each event and won a hat trick of silver medals in the 50m and 100m butterfly, 50m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle where he improved his time by 2.5 seconds.   Mason won four bronze medals and set 5 new PBs.  His medals came in the 50m freestyle and backstroke and in the 100m freestyle and butterfly events.

Ana Lazar, 13, finished second in the 200m butterfly and was third in the 50m butterfly while Adam Boxall, 14, finished second in the 1500m freestyle reducing his time by some 41seconds.  Kieran Peart, 17 recorded a new PB of 25.18 seconds for the 50m freestyle to win a silver medal.

Bronze medallists, Alexandra Clements, 16, Chloe Middleton, 16, J.J. Robins, 13, and Amy Henshaw, 15 were the clubs final medal winners.  Alexandra claimed a hat trick of third place finishes in the 100m and 200m backstroke and in the 50m butterfly events.  Chloe won bronze medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle, bettering her 100m time by some 4 seconds.  J.J. was third in the 400 I/M and 1500m freestyle while Amy finished third in the 800m freestyle event.
