Derwentside Christmas Cracker 2011 – Report

 

Ten year old Ben Hutchinson led the way for Sunderland at the Derwentside Christmas Cracker Meet held at the Louisa Centre, Stanley, with a superb double gold and silver medal haul. Ben touched home in a time of 33.96 to take the 50m freestyle gold and followed this up with a 38.90 finish to take the gold medal in the 50m butterfly event. He then went on to take silver medals in the 200m freestyle and butterfly events.

Team mate Joseph Pomfret (11) topped the podium in the 50m and 100m butterfly with respective times of 34.43 and 1.19.61 and he also won the 50m freestyle silver medal, while twelve year old James Brewerton also struck double gold with a 1.15.31 finish in the 100m backstroke and a 2.22.03 finish in the 200m freestyle.

Jodi Bunker was victorious in the twelve year olds 200m butterfly (2.35.73) and individual medley (2.35.92) and she also took two silver medals in the 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke as well as a bronze in the 200m backstroke.  Lucy Walton (14) won gold medals in the 100m freestyle (1.03.84) and the 200m individual medley (2.29.09), together with silver in the 200m butterfly, while fifteen year old Emma Sinclair took a gold, silver and bronze in the 200m butterfly (2.20.73), 200m backstroke and the 50m backstroke events.

Thirteen year old Jessica Thompson touched home with a time of 1.22.28 to take the 100m breaststroke gold medal and she followed his up with a hat trick of 200m bronze medals in the backstroke, butterfly and individual medley, while ten year old Ana Lazar also added to Sunderland’s gold medal haul with victory in the 200m butterfly in 3.11.90.

Brothers Thomas and James Burns chipped in with silver and bronze successes in the twelve and fourteen year old age groups. Thomas took a silver double in the 200m freestyle and breaststroke events and a bronze double in the 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke, while James won the 200m freestyle silver and the 200m breaststroke bronze.

Alexandra Robinson (17) also enjoyed 200m success with silver medals in the butterfly and individual medley, a bronze in the backstroke and a sprint bronze in the 50m freestyle, while twelve year old Freya Rayner won the 200m backstroke silver and the 100m freestyle bronze.  Thirteen year old Georgina Lamb and eleven year old Beth Nicholson also struck silver for Sunderland with respective successes in the 100m breaststroke and 50m backstroke events.

Bronze medallists for the City were – William Robinson (12) in the 50m and 100m butterfly, Natalya Sharp (10) 50m breaststroke, Joseph Robbins (10) 200m breaststroke, Jennifer Sharp (12) 200m butterfly and Andrew Markham (13) in the 200m freestyle.
