DATES FOR AQUATIC CENTRE REMEDIAL WORK CONFIRMED
Planned work on Sunderland Aquatic Centre to allow significant renewal works to be carried out to the roof of the pool area has now been confirmed to begin on Monday 6 April.
Infrastructure Group Balfour Beatty will carrying out the works on the building, which is expected to fully reopen before the end of the year.
Although the pool itself will be closed for the duration of the works, and the exercise studios will need to close for short periods, other parts of the centre including the gym, group cycling studio, changing rooms, soft play, café reception and foyer will remain open for use as normal during the period of the works.
Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration, Councillor Rebecca Atkinson, said: “This is a substantial and complex programme of renewal works which is why we’ve scheduled the work for over the spring and summer months when the weather is likely to be at its best. We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause some users but it’s important that the remedial work is completed.”
Aquatic Centre users will receive letters with further information about the closure, how it will/might affect them and what their options are, before the week beginning 10 February.
Ian Bradgate, Area Contract Manager at Everyone Active, said: “We will endeavour to keep the impact of the pool closure to a minimum while the rest of the centre continues to operate as normal.
“We are managing communications with our members to ensure they are aware of any changes that may affect them while the works are being completed.
“We would like to thank our members for their patience during this time.”
The work is being carried out by Balfour Beatty and involves complete replacement of the existing roof covering, required to resolve issues with persistent leaks, in conjunction with other ancillary works such as decoration.
