Northumberland & Durham Swimming Association Championships 2013 – Gala Report

The Aquatic Centre once again hosted the Northumberland & Durham Swimming Association Championships but unlike recent years the event was held over three weekends.  This enabled a full programme of events from the 50m sprints to the 800m and 1500m distance events as well as relays to take place.  The top swimmers from all over the counties of Northumberland and Durham were in action resulting in many fine performances, fast times and thrilling finishes.

City of Sunderland fielded a team of 45 swimmers from Junior Gold through to Performance A Squads winning 33 medals (six gold, fourteen silver and thirteen bronze) between them.  In the relay events, Sunderland took home a further two silver medals and one bronze.

Freya Rayner and Callum Reveley, both fourteen, continued a highly successful season by winning a stunning 14 individual medals between them.  Freya won her first medal in the 200m backstroke, finishing second and then just a short time later finished second again in the 100m freestyle final in a national qualifying time.  However it was in the sprint events that Freya really excelled, winning gold in the Fourteen Year Old age category in the 50m freestyle, backstroke and butterfly events.  She then competed in the finals of the same events but in the Open Age category and won three silver medals.   Her freestyle time of 27.26 was not only and ‘All Time’ club record but also an ‘All Time’ county record for her age group!  Her butterfly time of 29.33 is also an ‘All Time’ club record.

Callum took home two gold, two silver and two bronze medals from the championships.  He was first in the 50m freestyle and butterfly events, winning the freestyle in an exciting race by just two hundredths of a second.  Callum was second in the 200m and 100m freestyle events and finished third in the 200m and 100m butterfly events.  He narrowly missed out on a medal in the 50m backstroke, finishing 4th by two tenths of a second and also finished 4th in the 400m freestyle.  He set new personal best (pb) times in eight events.
