Wear Valley Meet – Gala Report

Twelve swimmers representing City of Sunderland’s Age Group Development and Junior Gold squads took part in the Wear Valley Level 3 Meet last weekend.  The heavily oversubscribed gala provided a great opportunity for our swimmers to race against some tough opposition.

Amy Dixon, 12, came away from the two day gala with a healthy total of six medals: two gold, a silver medal and three bronze medals.  Amy finished first in the 50m butterfly and 200m I/M, was second in the 200m freestyle and third in the 100m I/M, 100m backstroke and 200m breaststroke events.  Amy also set significant personal best times in six events.

Fourteen year old Alexandra Spencer won a hat trick of gold medals, finishing first in the 200m freestyle, 200m backstroke and 200m butterfly events.  Alexandra also won a bronze medal, finishing third in the 100m freestyle and achieving six personal bests over the weekend.

Winning three medals and setting five personal best times was ten year old Lara Greggs.  Lara finished second in the 100m and 200m backstroke and was third in the 50m freestyle events.

Nine year old Caitlin Cambrook, confirmed her skills in the 50m events by winning a gold medal in the 50m backstroke and a silver medal in the 50m freestyle swimming her fastest times to date.

Winning double bronze was Matthew Phillips, 12.  He was third in the 100m and 200m breaststroke events, improving his 100m time by almost five seconds.

Our final medallist was ten year old Zoe Price.  Zoe finished third in the 50m breaststroke to win a bronze medal.

Also competing and setting 21 new fastest times between them were: Niamh Swailes, 9, (swimming in her first gala), Tom Brumwell, 10, Luke Pye, 10, Vanessa Rubio, 10, Adam Boxall and Darcy Palmer, 13.
