Touching the Olympic Dream – 2012 British Champs Report

Five swimmers from the City of Sunderland ASC were amongst the first athletes to swim competitively in London’s new Olympic Aquatic Pool, in the 2012 British Championships / Olympic qualifiers.

Under the scrutiny of extensive BBC Television coverage all five Sunderland swimmers did the club proud.

Matthew Wylie reached the final of the multi disability 400m freestyle event where he finished seventh with a time of 4.41.98. This was Matthew’s first senior final, capping an excellent week in which he recorded personal best times in the 50m & 100m Freestyle events as well as the 200m Individual Medley.

Adam Taylor achieved a season best time in the 100m Backstroke, touching home in 59.44, to finish third for the 1996 competitors. In the 200m Backstroke Adam recorded a time of 2.08.2, finishing 48th overall, but first for the 1996 competitors.

Lucy Walton swam her second fastest time ever in the Women’s 200m Backstroke finishing in 2.20.60, while Danielle Huskisson finished 28th in the 400m Individual Medley and 16th in the 800m Freestyle.

Johnny Carlisle was a Senior Finalist in the 100m Backstroke finishing sixth and in the 200m Backstroke where he finished seventh in 2.01.54. Johnny broke the NER Senior Records with both of these swims.

A delighted Johnny told the Sunderland Echo, ‘I’m absolutely chuffed with what I’ve done this week. I changed coach at the start of the season and it’s worked great. I’ve been doing a lot more speed in training. I’ve been a lot happier this year in myself and in my training. In my 200m, I got a personal best. I’ve had a great week and it’s great to be at the Olympic Pool.
